PAJONSUK INTERVIEW
pajonsukhighkick.JPG

A CULT favourite the world over among fans of stand-up fighting, Pajonsuk Superpro Samui is rapidly climbing the ranks in K-1 and It's Showtime rules.

The thai boxing star with the powerful kicks and clinch has beaten K-1 Max finalist Yoshihiro Sato and starred on his Japanese debut in a turbulent 2010 which also saw him beat MMA fighter Chang Sung Jung on disqualification despite being knocked out and get rushed to hospital after suffering a collapsed lung while fighting Gago Drago.

Now comes his biggest test: a match-up against two-time and reigning K-1 Max champion Giorgio Petrosyan on the It's Showtime kickboxing event in Athens, Greece on December 11.

Fightnewz.net caught up with Pajonsuk to get his thoughts on the fight, his career and his future. With thanks to Robbie Timmers and Ben Pontier for the arrangement, photographs and translation.

FIGHTNEWZ.NET: A win over Petrosyan would be a brilliant end to what has been a dramatic year for you.

PAJONSUK: I have done many sports. Muay thai, amateur boxing, wushu. Now I have to change my style again to the K-1/ It’s Showtime style.
That is a difficult but challenging process. Due to my training at Superpro Samui on Koh Samui I am able to make this change.

I have many K-1 and It’s Showtime style orientated sparring partners and also lots of thai training partners to keep my kicks sharp.

I fight to support my family. I do not care who I have to face.  I will do all that is necasarry to take care of my family.

If beating Petrosyan gives me the best future, then I have to beat him.

FIGHTNEWZ.NET: How is training going for Petrosyan? Are you getting some southpaw sparring?

PAJONSUK: Here at Superpro Samui I have many K-1 orientated sparring partners. They have some fighters that actually live here, but also new fighters coming over all the time.

I have sparred with Gago Drago, Sahin Yakut, Ernesto Hoost, Wendell Roche, they all visit Superpro Samui regularly.

And now Lhoucine 'Aussie' Ouzgni from Holland is coming to prepare for his world title fight in Holland on December 18.

He will also be a good sparring partner for me. The head coach of Superpro Samui visits Holland a couple of months a year.

He brings this experience of western kickboxing back with him when he returns to Samui.

FIGHTNEWZ.NET: How highly do you rate Petrosyan? What do you think are his main strengths?

PAJONSUK: I do not watch boxing that much. I train, eat and sleep - that is what my life looks like.

I have never seen Petrosyan fight. But I heard he is the K-1 Max champion. I know the level in K-1 Max is extremely high.

Now for the first time they let me watch my opponent fight. The sport is evolving and Superpro Samui helps me evolve too.

It is a difficult process. I fought maybe 300 fights and now suddenly I have to change my style and way of thinking.
It is just the challenge I need to keep motivated.

FIGHTNEWZ.NET: As you know, Petrosyan won the K-1 Max for the second year in a row recently.

PAJONSUK: I am now watching his fight. He is a great fighter, but he is also human. Just like every human being he has weaknesses. On December 11 I will expose those weaknesses for him.

FIGHTNEWZ.NET: What are you expecting from the fight? Will it be the toughest of your career?

PAJONSUK: All my fights are tough. I go into the ring and the only thing that is on my mind is winning.

I have to win so I can take care of my family. I cannot let somebody take that away from me. Even if it is Petrosyan.

FIGHTNEWZ.NET: In what areas do you think you are superior to him?

PAJONSUK: Come and watch December 11 and you will get your answers then!

FIGHTNEWZ.NET: How do you think the fight will go? Points, knockout? He is a tricky southpaw counter fighter who can also be effective going forward.

PAJONSUK: Of course we will go for the knockout. That is what people want to see and they pay my bills, so a knockout is what they get.

FIGHTNEWZ.NET: What exactly happened at the Enfusion final? What do you remember about the incident? How long were you in hospital?

PAJONSUK: I was in the hospital for about 10 days. I hurt my lung. It was less serious that people thought it was. It was a tough fight with Drago.

He is strong and he just kicked me unexpectedly on the wrong place. We did a complete doctor check and X-ray after that and it was not a problem. I feel stronger than ever and cannot wait to fight.

FIGHTNEWZ.NET: You seemed to recover quickly.

PAJONSUK: Just like I said, the injury was less surious then people thought. I had to come back because fighting is my future and my work.

I need this to provide for my family. Of course my health is more important but my body recovered quickly and the doctors said I was able to fight again.

FIGHTNEWZ.NET: What was the biggest lesson you learned against Chang Sung Jung - apart from keeping your hands up! Did you underestimate him because he was an MMA fighter and not a stand-up fighter?

PAJONSUK: Keeping my hands up at all time was a great lesson (laughs). I did not underestimate him beforehand.

The fight went pretty well and I did not feel any danger so I might have got a little sloppy. This will not happen again.
I have to keep my emotions in check during a fight.

FIGHTNEWZ.NET: Do you think you have improved defensively since then? Sometimes you lean out of range with your hands down but  then again, when you have so much experience and know distance and timing you can do that.

PAJONSUK: Yes, my defence has improved and I am still working on it. There is always more work to be done.
At Superpro Samui they are helping me with that.

FIGHTNEWZ.NET: How pleased are you with the way you are adapting to K-1 and It’s Showtime rules without elbows and clinching?

PAJONSUK: I am willing to fight under any rules. I have learned that adapting is not as easy as I thought it would be, but we are getting there.

Clinching was my speciality, but now we just have to create some new specialities. What they are, you will find out in my next fights.

FIGHTNEWZ.NET: The commentators loved your K-1 Max debut against Woo Yong Choi at the K-1 Max Final 16. What did you think of your performance?

PAJONSUK: It was a good fight. I showed that I have adapted well to the K-1 style, but I am not satisfied yet. We keep on working.

FIGHTNEWZ.NET: What do you think you are capable of achieving in K-1 Max? After all, you have already beaten Yoshihiro Sato, who made this year's final.

PAJONSUK: I would love to get the chance to fight in the tournament. I am sure I would do well.

FIGHTNEWZ.NET: How long have you been fighting muay thai?

PAJONSUK: For a long time. I started when I was a young boy. I have had over 300 fights.

FIGHTNEWZ.NET: How long will you continue for?

PAJONSUK: As long as I can. As long as I feel good and love training I want to keep on fighting.

FIGHTNEWZ.NET: You have fought many times in Holland. How did you end up fighting there in the first place?

PAJONSUK: Through John Chin and Robbie Timmers of STB fightgear. They had lots of contacts in Holland. They arranged many fights for me.

After that they brought me into contact with It’s Showtime. It’s Showtime is probably the biggest stand up-organisation in the world.

They give me the chance to make a good career out of fighting. After my break from amateur boxing, Robbie Timmers became the manager of Superpro Samui.

There he set up a meeting with Remon Daalder, who is the co-owner of It’s Showtime and also owns Superpro Samui.

Remon offered me a contract again with It’s Showtime and now I want to get the most out of my career.

FIGHTNEWZ.NET: You boxed under your birth name Angkhan Chomphuphuang for Thailand at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and reached the last 16 in the middleweight division. How much did your time in amateur boxing improve your hand techniques and power?

PAJONSUK: I am much quicker with my hands. Only amateur boxing is different than K-1/It’s Showtime boxing. This is an adjustment we had to make and we are still working on it.

FIGHTNEWZ.NET: Who would you like to fight in future? Have you got any fights lined up for next year?

PAJONSUK: I will fight anyone my manager Remon Daalder offers me. I trust him in what's best for my career. Since I signed with them I fought the best in the world. I want to show my skills to the whole world.
